Start siding with net wall area
Measure each wall, subtract the openings the installation instructions allow you to exclude, then apply waste and divide by the product's stated package coverage. Corners, starter strips, trim, soffit, fascia, and fasteners remain separate.
Roof pitch changes slope length
A rise of 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run has a slope multiplier of about 1.118. Multiply the horizontal run by that factor, then add overhang only if the calculator inputs and project measurements call for it.
Geometry does not size a rafter
Member species, grade, spacing, span, loads, connections, bearing, cuts, and local code determine whether a rafter design is acceptable. Use approved plans or a qualified professional for structural decisions.

Is the calculated rafter length ready to cut?

Why does roof pitch increase material?
A sloped surface is longer than its horizontal run, so steeper roofs increase slope length and usually roof surface area.
