Board feet use actual dimensions

Board feet equal thickness in inches multiplied by width in inches multiplied by length in feet, divided by 12, then multiplied by quantity. A nominal 2x6 may have smaller actual dimensions, so use the dimensions of the material being priced.

Stud spacing creates only the base layout

For one straight wall, divide wall length in inches by the on-center spacing, round up, and include the ending position. Corners, intersecting walls, doors, windows, headers, backing, fire blocking, and hold-down details are separate.

Turn the estimate into a purchase list

Keep studs, plates, headers, blocking, sheathing, fasteners, and waste on separate lines. This makes it easier to compare the calculator result with approved drawings and correct one assumption without rebuilding the whole list.
