Start with one clear cost-per-mile definition
The calculator adds the annual cost buckets you enter, then divides that total by annual miles. This makes the scope auditable: you can see whether your comparison includes fuel or charging, maintenance, tires, insurance, registration, depreciation, financing interest, parking, tolls, and another annual cost. A result is only as comparable as the scope behind it. Use the same categories and time period for every vehicle you compare.
Keep fixed and variable costs separate
Fuel or charging, wear items, parking, and tolls often move with use. Insurance, registration, depreciation, and financing interest may stay fairly fixed over a year even if mileage changes. Both kinds of costs can be relevant to personal ownership cost per mile, but they react differently when you drive more or less. Recording them separately helps prevent a low-mile year from being mistaken for a low-cost vehicle or a high-mile year from hiding a large fixed expense.
Do not substitute the IRS mileage rate for your personal result
The IRS mileage rate is a tax and reimbursement method with its own current rules and eligibility limits. IRS Topic 510 distinguishes the standard mileage method from actual-expense treatment and lists costs that can be relevant to actual vehicle expenses. That guidance is useful for understanding the distinction, but it does not turn a personal cost-per-mile estimate into a deductible amount, reimbursement entitlement, or business-use record. Keep business-use, substantiation, and tax questions separate from this calculator.
Avoid double counting depreciation and loan principal
A loan payment can include both principal and interest. Principal changes the balance you owe; it is not, by itself, a recurring ownership cost to add on top of depreciation. This calculator therefore asks for annual finance interest or a lease rent charge rather than the full payment, while depreciation represents your estimate of vehicle-value loss. Entering both full principal payments and depreciation can exaggerate cost. If you do not have a reliable depreciation estimate, test a low and high scenario rather than pretending it is certain.
Use the result to compare decisions, not to create a universal rate
Run the same annual miles and same cost buckets for a current vehicle and a replacement vehicle. Real examples
- With $10,800 of entered annual costs and 12,000 annual miles, the personal cost-per-mile result is $0.90. A different mileage assumption changes the per-mile result even when the annual cost total stays the same.
- If $1,800 of fuel, $1,200 of maintenance, $400 of tires, $600 of parking and tolls, $1,800 of insurance, $300 of registration, $4,000 of depreciation, $500 of finance interest, and $200 of other cost are entered, those buckets total $10,800 before dividing by miles.
- If the same $10,800 annual total is spread across 18,000 miles rather than 12,000, the result is $0.60 per mile. That does not mean the vehicle's fixed costs fell; it means they were spread across more miles.
Mistakes to avoid
- Mixing a partial year of costs with a full year of miles.
- Treating the IRS mileage rate as a personal cost or reimbursement promise.
- Adding full loan principal payments and depreciation to the same annual total.
- Comparing two vehicles with different categories of costs included.
- Forgetting parking, tolls, tires, registration, or a known recurring expense.
- Assuming a single depreciation estimate is a market-value forecast.

Should insurance be included?
