Our calculator pages are built to show the formula, explain the inputs, provide examples, and highlight assumptions so readers can understand how each result is estimated.

Depth determines the volume

Mulch volume is area multiplied by depth. A 3-inch layer uses twice as much mulch as a 1.5-inch top-up over the same bed.

Bags are convenient, bulk is efficient

Bags work well for small beds and touch-ups. Bulk cubic yards are usually easier and cheaper for larger landscape projects.

Avoid piling mulch too deep

Very deep mulch can hold moisture against trunks and plant stems. Keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and use only the depth the bed actually needs.
